Keep a Practice Journal

Have you ever sat down to practice your dulcimer and said, “Now what was I working on last time?” No? Well, maybe I’m the only one. But to keep on top of things, I keep a practice log or journal. Here are several compelling reasons why I think all of us should be maintaining a practice log.

  1. Tracking Progress: A practice journal provides a clear record of your musical development over time, which can be highly motivating and encouraging.

  2. Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses: Recording what you practice allows you to pinpoint areas where you excel and areas that need more attention. This awareness enables you to focus your practice sessions more effectively.

  3. Setting Goals: By jotting down what you want to achieve in each practice session or over a longer period, you can structure your practice time to work towards these goals systematically.

  4. Maintaining Consistency: Consistent practice is the key to improving as a musician. A practice log helps you stay accountable to your practice schedule.

  5. Memory Aid: A practice log serves as a memory aid, especially for complex pieces or techniques you're working on. You can jot down notes about tricky passages, fingerings, dynamics, or interpretations that you want to remember and refine in future sessions.

  6. Reflecting on Performance: After jam sessions, reviewing your practice log can help you evaluate your preparation. It allows you to identify which tunes went well and other tunes you might want to learn before the next jam session.

  7. Building Discipline: Keeping a practice log cultivates discipline and commitment to your musical goals. It reinforces the habit of regular practice and dedication to your craft, which are essential qualities for long-term success as a musician.

I think you will find that keeping a practice log can be personally satisfying. It provides a sense of accomplishment as you see your progress documented over time. It will serve as a tangible reminder of your dedication and hard work in pursuing your musical aspirations.

Happy dulcimering,
Linda
