Sneaky Self-Saboteurs

SelfSaboteurChainsaw

We’re all guilty. We have all done one or more of these things from time to time. We have knowingly or unknowingly sabotaged our own music practice time. Not me, you might say. Well, read my list and see if any of these triggers a memory or tweaks your conscience.

  1. Lack of motivation: If you're not motivated or passionate about practicing, it can be challenging to stay focused and dedicated to your dulcimer. Finding ways to stay inspired, setting specific goals, and reminding yourself of the joy music brings can help combat lack of motivation.
  2. Distractions: Distractions such as electronic devices, noise, or interruptions can disrupt your practice sessions. Creating a quiet and organized practice space, turning off notifications, and setting specific practice times can help minimize distractions.

  3. Procrastination: Putting off practice sessions or waiting until the last minute to practice can hinder progress. Establishing a consistent practice routine and breaking down practice sessions into manageable chunks can help overcome procrastination.

  4. Overwhelmed: Trying to tackle too much at once or setting unrealistic expectations can lead to feelings of overwhelm. Break down practice sessions into smaller tasks, focus on one aspect at a time, and set achievable goals to prevent feeling overwhelmed.

  5. Negative self-talk: Self-doubt, criticism, or comparing yourself to others can impact your confidence and enjoyment of practicing. Cultivating a positive mindset, celebrating small victories, and focusing on your progress can help combat negative self-talk.

  6. Physical discomfort: Playing an instrument can be physically demanding, and discomfort or pain can sabotage practice time. Ensuring proper posture, taking breaks, and incorporating stretches or exercises to prevent injuries can help maintain physical well-being during practice.

By identifying and addressing these sneaky self-saboteurs, you can create a more conducive environment for productive and enjoyable music practice sessions.

Happy dulcimering,
Linda
