Why Don’t I Practice More?

I’m a music teacher!!!! I know the importance of practicing regularly. I preach (teach) about the importance of practicing regularly. In spite of that, I find that “regular” practice usually only kicks in when I have a looming deadline.

Why is that? Is it because I’m too busy? Well, sure, I do have a lot going on. Is it because I’m too tired? True, at the end of the day I’m worn out. Is it that I’m not motivated to practice? Actually, my personal motivation appears to be linked to having a “play” date scheduled. But there may be a deeper issue going on here.

Psychologists call it the “Pleasure-Pain Principle.” And this may be working against you too, without your even realizing it. Here’s the reasoning behind it …

If I don't practice, I'll have the pleasure of...”

  • more time available for other things, like watching TV or hanging with friends.
  • not failing at learning a tune or technique (since I never engaged in the first place).
  • the delusion that I didn’t need to practice anyway.
  • one less thing to deal with in my busy schedule.
  • not feeling bad about how little progress I’m making.

On the other hand, if I DO practice I might feel the pain of …

  • not sounding good and feeling upset with myself.
  • giving up what I wanted to do instead (like reading my book).
  • self-doubt, believing I’m never going to get better no matter how much I practice.
  • being responsible by doing what I ought to do instead of making excuses.

These are just a few examples, but their effect can be powerful and hold you back from achieving your musical goals. If regular practice is an issue for you, I suggest you take some time out to write down your own list.

  1. What gives you joy when you practice?
  2. What causes you pain when you practice?

You may find out you’re not practicing regularly for a feeling you didn’t even realized was lurking below the surface. Exchange the negative feelings to more positive associations, and you may see yourself advancing further along your musical journey.

Happy dulcimering,
Linda
