Never Stop Learning

You probably think that people like Steve Eulberg or Stephen Seifert have learned everything they can about playing the dulcimer, and just need to brush up on their skills now and then. You may even believe that someone like Erin Mae Lewis simply operates on a higher level and never has any problems with her playing. Well, it ain’t true.

Music, like any art form, is an evolving journey, and even the most accomplished musicians continue to grow, refine their skills, and explore new ideas. There are several reasons why learning remains an ongoing process for musicians, regardless of their experience level:

1. Continuous Development of Technique

Even after years of playing, musicians can always improve their technique. Whether it’s refining subtle nuances in phrasing, mastering a difficult passage, or experimenting with new fingerings or bowings, there's always room for technical growth.

2. Adapting to New Musical Styles

The world of music is vast, with countless genres, traditions, and trends. I am especially impressed with folks who can play jazz on their mountain dulcimers.

3. Learning from Others

No matter how skilled a musician becomes, there's always something to learn from peers, mentors, or even younger musicians. Collaborating with others, attending masterclasses, or simply listening to different interpretations of music can provide fresh perspectives.

4. The Role of Technology

The introduction of new technologies, from digital music production tools to new instruments and software, has opened up many new avenues for learning.

So many of my dulcimer heroes appear to have “mastered” the dulcimer. However, in music, mastery is simply a part of a larger, ongoing journey. The pursuit of musical excellence doesn't stop after a certain level of achievement. In other words, experienced musicians embrace the idea that learning is a lifelong process. It’s not just about acquiring more skills, but about staying curious, open-minded, and constantly engaging with the world of music. The beauty of music is that it offers endless possibilities for growth, no matter where you are in your musical journey.

So let’s get busy. We ALL have more to learn!

Happy dulcimering,
Linda
