Chromatic Mountain Dulcimer Sample Lesson-Erin Mae Lewis

Hello. I am Erin Rogers for dulcimercrossing.com. Today I'm gonna talk some more about the chromatic mountain dulcimer. I wanted to start by talking a little bit about the different approaches to the chromatic dulcimer and kind of how I look at the instrument. I just taught a week long camp at Kentucky Music Week, and one of the classes was all about chromatic mountainelsmar, and it was very fun to see the different reasons that various people pick up a chromatic, instrument.
So there there was one lady in the class who had, chromatic dulcimer because she wanted to mostly play tunes in d, but every once in a while she needed an extra note, one that was missing on her diatonic dulcimer. And so, she just wanted to have those accidentals kind of available to her. There was one person who really wanted to be able to play with his church group, and so needed to be able to play in all of the keys in order to be able to participate with the piano and organ and various other instruments. And then there are several other people who are just kind of exploring it, like, what repertoire can we play on the chromatic dulcimer, what can this instrument be used for. My personal reason for getting into chromatic was really because my sister sings in flat keys and plays fiddle tunes in sharp keys, and rather than have to retune between every song or pick up a different instrument for every song, I wanted to be able to just have it all in one instrument.
And I also love to sit in on bluegrass jams, which tend to jump around between various different keys. C and g are often singing keys, and then there's fiddle tunes in a and sometimes b, and, so I wanted to be able to to play in all of those keys without having to, oh, no, I need a different dulcimer, or I have to retune between every song. And so for me, the chromatic instrument basically gives me the ability to play in every single key, and that's what I love it for.

In this sample lesson from Erin Mae Lewis, she explains why she loves to play the Chromatic mountain dulcimer.  This is a part of her 45-lesson course in playing this type of instrument.

This course is available as a stand-along ala carte course AND is available to all levels of DulcimerCrossing membership, DIY, Workshop and Mentor and can be found on our site by searching by Teacher [Erin Mae Lewis] and instrument [Chromatic Mountain Dulcimer].
