Roadblock in Your Way?

We have all gotten to the point with a new tune when we felt like pulling our hair out … or putting it aside because we just can’t “get it.” But, at the same time, we like the tune so much we hate to give up on it. Research has shown that people get set in their ways, stick with the familiar, and do the same things the same way over and over. And this tendency can spill over into your dulcimer practice – bringing you to a dead stop at a roadblock. I have a few suggestions for getting around the musical roadblock.

  • Identify the Roadblock: Pinpoint exactly what is causing the difficulty. It might just be one measure, or just Part B of the tune.

  • Break It Down: Break down the section of music defeating you into smaller, manageable parts.

  • Review Fundamentals: Often, roadblocks occur because there are gaps in foundational knowledge. Go back to basics and ensure you have a solid understanding of the rhythm pattern, the chord progression, the melody line, even the background of the tune. It will make a difference.

  • Take a Break: Sometimes, stepping away from the tune for a day or even a week allows your brain to process the technique needed to overcome the roadblock.

  • Simplify: I have often (especially when playing the keyboard) simplified an arrangement to fit my hands better.

  • Adjust Your Approach: My personal best approach is to break down difficult sections, measure by measure, then line by line. But if that method isn’t working for you, try a different approach. Experiment until you find what works best for you.

When you finally master the tune, don’t forget to celebrate.

Happy dulcimering,
Linda
