Spider Bit the Baby

Spider Bit the Baby is an old-time, breakdown fiddle tune in C Major, recorded by Kenny Baker. Kenny Baker was a bluegrass fiddling legend. His standing as a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship (1993) and a member of the International Bluegrass Association Hall of Honor, having served the longest tenure of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, and recording innumerable solo albums and making session appearances attest to his legacy.

The first time Vi heard Spider Bit the Baby, he was 11 years old at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, KS. Billy Ward played the lively tune on his fiddle and won 1st place (1987) playing it as his breakdown. Vi heard Billly play the tune at other contests, but didn’t actually learn it until he heard it on the Dale Morris Album, Old Time Fiddlin’ New for ’78.

The slide up to an E with the 4th finger kind of gives a sound like a baby howling, which is always fun.
