About the Lessons
1. | Demonstration | Vi begins by giving a demonstration of old fiddle tune included on his Fiddle Whamdiddle albumn, Old School Old-Time. |
2. | Lower Octave | Vi also demonstrates that it is possible to play the tune an octave lower. |
3. | A Part Higher Octave |
The A part starts with a slide. Vi goes through this section slowly at first, and then plays a second time up to speed. |
4. | B Part Higher Octave |
In this walk-through of the melody, Vi introduces a couple of variations to give a little more dynamic and range contrast. |
5. | A & B Part Together Higher Octave |
Here Vi started out with the B part in the higher octave, and then adds a few more variations for us. |
6. | A Part Lower Octave |
Here Vi added a drone on the G string, and plays through the A Part in the lower octave. |
7. | Up to Speed | Finally Vi plays through the entire tune, up to speed and with ornamentation. |

![]() Are you saying, “I know what a fiddle is but what is a whamdiddle?” The whamdiddle is a slang name for the hammered dulcimer; “hog fiddle” is a slang name for the mountain dulcimer, both are traditional American folk instruments. Together with the fiddle they make for a porch-picking, knee-slapping good time. To purchase the CD only:To purchase the Book: To purchase the Downloadable Book & CD Combo: |
