About the Lessons

1. Intro & Demo This is a ragtime tune, adapted from the melody of Robert Schumann's piano composition "The Happy Farmer, Returning From Work," from his 1848 Album for the Young, Opus 68.
2. Free Form, Slower Learn the melody first. Then add improvisations similar to the way it is played by Vi - but don't feel this melody line is written "in concrete." Vi probably never plays it the same way twice! Feel free to play around with it and come up with your own arrangement.

Music GlobeExtras

  • Vi plays this lively tune for us on his "Fiddle Tune a Day" project. I heard some notes in there that are not included in his lesson!

  • Lyrics: The song tells of a young Indian girl's loss of her sweetheart who has died in battle.

  • The composer, Kerry Mills, also published music under the name F.A. Mills, or Frederick Allen Mills. He was an American ragtime composer and music publishing executive of popular music during the Tin Pan Alley era. Kerry was head of the Violin Department of the University of Michigan School of Music when he began composing. He was most prolific between 1895 and 1918.

  • This tune has stood the test of time, and translated from a ragtime tune to a bluegrass tune. Enjoy this rendition by "Grass Root Ties," a bluegrass group from Germany.
