Bringing Melodies To Life: Dressing Tips and Techniques
Workshop level: level 3 (intermediate) to 4 (int/adv)
Workshop description: When playing a melody on the hammered dulcimer, it is often challenging to also play our own accompaniment on the fly. In this workshop, I’ll share my general method and favorite tricks to elegantly dress melody lines with limited resort to hand independence, using rudiments of harmony and percussion.
A workshop focused on hammered dulcimer.
About Val:
Val Cortoni is a folk musician and hammered dulcimer tutor based in Paris, France. A hammered dulcimer player since 2015, former student of USA national champion Mark Alan Wade, Val enjoys exploring a wide range of styles, from folk, medieval, and baroque music to heavy metal. Between 2020 and 2022, he has released two CDs, Nomade and Corélian, presenting his unique fusion of hammered dulcimer and electronic elements.
In 2025, after a decade as a mechanical engineer, Val has embarked on his journey as a full-time musician. Since then, he joined the Parisian folk bands Luscald and Dulce Melos, tutored at prestigious dulcimer events in the UK and the US, organized his first dulcimer gathering in France, recorded his hammered dulcimer for world-class clients (Disneyland Paris), and released his very first book "Légendes Médiévales" - a collection of French Medieval music arranged for the hammered dulcimer.
