VideoAbout the Lessons

1. Demonstration Steve begins by demonstrating how to play the blues with a backing track.
2. In the Box Although Steve's mountain dulcimer is tuned to D-A-d, he is playing the blues in the Key of E minor, using the Pentatonic Minor Box.
3. Playing One Note In this video, Steve demonstrates how you could play with the backing track by playing only one note. Sometimes it sounds good - but sometimes not so much!
4. Sliding to Find the Note Here Steve shows us how to move linearly, building a blues melody playing just one note at a time.
5. Expand Box Now Steve explains how to add the "hammer on" to his blues melody.
6. Using the Strategy Steve combines the suggestions taught so far into a short arrangement.
7. Finding the Tracks Our Play-Along Backing Tracks Library is a regular benefit of Premium Membership and they are located on the Premium Membership Page.

This one is offered here for your educational purposes. If you’d like to upgrade to Premium Membership you’ll have access to the entire expanding Library of Backing Tracks.

8. Playing an Octave Higher In this example, Steve uses a pentatonic box higher up on the fretboard, and noodles his blues melody for us. Did you notice how he never plays it the same way twice?
9. Conclusion The backing track is on a loop, and provides a place where you can try out things at home alone. Then when you are with friends, you'll already know what sounded good and what didn't work out as well for you.

  • Here's an example with three hammered dulcimer tracks played by John Page against an excellent backing track by Quist. He calls this Dorian Groove in E.
