VideoAbout the Lessons

1. Bluegrass Lick
Going Down in D-A-d
In the first series of lessons, we learned to do a bluegrass lick going up. Now Steve teaches us how to do the bluegrass lick going down.
2. Lick Going Down
with Articulations
We can also add hammer-ons and hammer-offs to the bluegrass lick. This is a great woodshedding exercise.
3. Practicing the Lick
as a Woodshedding Exercise
Woodshedding means spending extra time going over and over a particular piece of the music to sharpen your accuracy in that area. Time spent working on bluegrass licks is time well spent.
4. Bluegrass Lick
Going Down in D-A-A
Steve shows us how to play the bluegrass lick on a dulcimer tuned in D-A-A. But this is a fairly simple switch, because the only thing that is different is the melody string.
5. Using the 1+ Fret in
D-A-d, Going Up & Down
Using the 1+ fret adds a bluesy sound to the bluegrass lick. Steve demonstrates using the Lester Flatt lick.
6. Open Chords in G By putting capo at the 3rd fret, Steve is able to play in the key of G without retuning. He shows us chords in the key of G and uses them to play an open chord backup for I'll Fly Away.
7. Chop Chords in G Here Steve again puts his capo at the 3rd fret, but this time uses chop chords to play the backup of I'll Fly Away
8. Playing Melody in G With the capo still at the 3rd fret, Steve plays melody only for I'll Fly Away. It's good to learn this tune in G, because at jam sessions they may call out that tune in G.
9. Open Chords in A By moving the capo to the 4th fret, we can now play in the key of A. The chords work the same way as before.
10. Chop Chords in A Finally, Steve plays the chop chords in A for I'll Fly Away.
